Simple outdoor activities like running, biking and blading seem to be taking place in hell if you choose to do them at the wrong time of the day. I have had to suspend my late afternoon boot camps for now because having a bunch of people running, jumping, sprinting and leap frogging during near 100 degree temperatures is not a great idea. Even doing kick boxing at 7:30 pm, it's pretty dam hot. For those of you that are hopping on the outdoor exercise craze that comes along with summertime, be sure to take a few precautions before you go out there and burn off those cals.

I mean, you can still get your workout on, but do it carefully! Here are some things to do to stay safer during those outdoor workouts.

Pick the coolest times of the day to go out and exercise. Early mornings up until about 11 and evenings are the best when the temperatures go upwards of 85 degrees.

Wear light colored, breathable clothing.

Don't forget the sunscreen. Yes, you're going to sweat it off, but just reapply after the workout is over. You must be sure to protect that skin no matter what.

Decrease your intensity a bit. The hot temperature does make a difference in how much energy you are expending. You don't have to slow down to a crawl, but do rein it in just a bit. You'll find that your energy level will stay up for a lot longer, and you won't feel nauseous or as if you're ready to pass out.

Hydrate!! You knew that one was coming, right? Water, water, water.... and oh yeah, more water! Before the workout, small sips during your workout and afterwards to replenish some of the fluids you lost. You will sweat up to twice as much in your normal workout when the temperatures are high. Be sure to avoid that dehydration and drink up!

Protect those eyes. Sports shades and glasses to protect your eyes from those powerful UV rays are a must. There are all types now that are designed to stay on no matter what activity you're doing. Invest in a good pair, and be sure to take them with you on every super sunny workout day.

You don't have to stop those outdoor workouts, but do take that proper precautions and stay safe. It's just all out there right now, everything. Sex, drugs, alcohol, you name it. I would be afraid to be a parent of a teenager right now.

As jaded as the typical New Yorker can be, I still found myself quite shocked when I came upon a group of teens toting one of their drunken friends home from school today. You can think that you've seen it all, but when these types of incidents occur they can still shock the hell out of you. It sure did me.

Picture it, 4:00pm in the bright daylight of afternoon, the streets full and as alive as you'll usually find them at this time of the day in the city, and kids of all ages are coming home from school. At a crosswalk, I come up behind this group of teens, 4 boys, 3 girls, about 14, 15 years old, I'd say, and notice that one of the girls is being held up on her feet and guided to walk by two of her friends. Upon a closer look, I see that this girl is totally and completely SMASHED. I mean, wobbling, falling down drunk. She's babbling and giggling, causing a scene, and her friends keep telling her to shut up. She promptly doesn't listen, and just loudly talks gibberish on and on while they help to keep her standing. Obviously they're not trying to draw to much attention here, and she's not helping!
The traffic light changes, and they help her across the street, with her hanging, stumbling and babbling the entire way, her face beet red. I'm just wondering what in the hell they are going to tell her parents when they finally get her home. I swear, I know it's probably more common than I would like to think, but it nearly shocked me out of my shoes! It was the middle of the day and out in the bright daylight on a school day!

I remember sneaking drinks with my friends as a teen around our houses. All of our parents had liquor cabinets, and we would figure out ways to get into them. It was mainly a weekend thing. That doesn't make it any better than what extent other kids took it to, I know. However, We did draw the line at taking liquor to school. That would have been putting our feet too close to the fire.

So, even though I was no saint myself as a teen, it still knocked me for a loop to witness this. I know about the peer pressure that comes along with being a kid of any age. I know all about doing whatever rebellious thing you can get yourself into behind your parents backs. It was fun, it made us feel grown up and oh so brave. How cool and refreshing it was to thumb our noses at authority! You couldn't tell us anything! Given the dangerous and not so smart things we did trying so hard to be bad asses back then, thank God most of us survived!!

It made me really sad to see that drunken girl coming home from school today. I hope she survives, too.
Hopefully she'll get the worst hangover of her life after it's all said and done and not want to touch the stuff ever again. One can only hope! ;)

What oh what to do to keep your kids and teens from all of the dangers and pitfalls of life? God only knows.

Anyway, here are some facts and statistics regarding teen alcohol abuse. I am a bit surprised that some of these numbers are so high:

Alcohol is the number one abused substance by teenagers in the United States

Underage drinkers account for 11.4% of all the alcohol consumed in the United States

Teen alcohol abuse also plays a role in other types of injuries as well as contributing to higher incidences of unwanted or unplanned sex.

Teen alcohol abuse is the number one cause of injury death, which is the leading cause of death in people under 21. This includes car accidents from DUI, physical fights, homicides, suicides, falls and toxic poisoning to name a few.

Alcohol abuse increases the occurrence of teen dating violence. According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), among college students under age 21 alone, 50,000 experience alcohol- related date rape and 430,000 are assaulted by another student who has been drinking.

--National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism

While these are stats based on teens in the US, I'm sure that underage drinking is a problem in some other countries as well.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com12tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3548443308292349135.post-45742199425231262412010-02-02T12:31:00.000-08:002010-02-03T12:47:21.239-08:00Is Infidelity Becoming The Norm?<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 303px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhy0M7vYU_h-40kgID7lgce9ILFtxu2VlXVG-9P2wY31ZYynk_rtb8wt-ExuT00hO5a6rtu3vwMcF5gKgVpFeS-wK1xIJra887pmsYC4o9CwgZS6KZm41kjPYf_665JysBJF_0jxZyCBzl7/s320/angry+young+couple.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5434117954115347634" />

Every time you pick up a paper or turn the TV on, you're made aware that yet another high profile or famous person is guilty of breaking their wedding vows by cheating with one or more people. Be it a politician, an athlete, and entertainer or just the guy next door, it seems that cheating on your spouse just because you feel like it is in these days.

When did that happen? When and why did cheating become so in vogue and such a quick reaction to whatever ails a person in a relationship?

Has it always been that way, or are we just seeing it more because it's now considered news? At one time such indiscretions would never have been posted in your daily newspaper, but nowadays they make the front page more often than we want to see.

And what exactly makes a cheater cheat?

We all see how much in love a couple usually is on their wedding day, how much trouble and care is taken to even create special wedding vows, to invite everyone in the world to witness the special event in your life, and in some cases spend a boatload of cash to get it all done.

But then, no matter how much in love they seemed in the beginning, how meaningfully the vows were spoken and how right they seemed for each other at the start, eventually, either one spouse or the other decides to start looking at and rolling around in some supposedly greener pastures elsewhere.

It seems to be that it's not a matter of IF a spouse is going to cheat on ypu, it's more a case of WHEN. It's said that men still cheat in higher numbers than women, but watch out, guys...the girls are catching up!

Whether it's cheating as revenge, perceived neglect, to feed one's ego, or just to make up for the loneliness felt when your spouse is out laying it down with someone else, this is a trend that doesn't seem to be slowing down anytime soon.

So, are we really cheating more, or is it just more publicized? It seems that each fitness expert out there has their own theory, but in the midst of all those theories, you can clear away the clutter just by realizing what working out really is supposed to do for you.

So, What's the best exercise plan? Well, the best workout regimen is one that addresses nearly all aspects of fitness, not just one. A good workout regimen, and by regimen, I mean what you do on not just one day, but for your entire workout week, should address and improve the following:

Muscle Strength
Cardiovascular Health
Flexibility
Agility
Balance

You can even get all of that in one workout if you're doing the right thing. Martial arts classes are great for improving all of the above, and so are interval training and certain boot camp work outs where the exercise selections are tailored to meet all of those elements.

Are you addicted to a particular type of exercise? I know Spin and Step junkies from way back, and everyone knows how runners get addicted to running (in a good way). Nothing wrong with having a fave, must-do exercise, but just make sure that you're also getting in exercises that are a bit different from your favorite one on your alternate days. In other words, don't just spin/bike/run/box, etc every single workout. Make sure there are days where you are training your body in different disciplines and in a different way.

So, enough with just weight training, only doing cardio or just taking yoga, etc.
Either find a workout that is varied enough to train your body as completely as possible, or mix it up throughout the week.
That way, you've got it all covered!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com14tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3548443308292349135.post-10415926524317112822009-12-25T11:42:00.000-08:002009-12-26T12:58:34.441-08:00Getting Control of Your Anger

For many of us, learning to control our tempers is one of the hardest things in the world to do. Our societies have become places where people now feel comfortable to say, do or act towards you in any way they please, and whether right or wrong, your reaction to this can be devastating if you just let your anger fly.
Homicide and assault rates are up, and the prisons are full of people who just in the blink of anger reacted in a way to some offense that changed their life and someone else's forever. How can one hold their composure in the face of extreme adversity without completely losing it and possibly killing someone?
People do seem to try you more and more often these days. Even though they may be wrong, you have to be the one that stays firmly in control. Saying it is far easier than doing it in real life, though! As humans it is natural for us to react defensively or go into an extreme offensive mode when we feel threatened or attacked. Those of you with a hair trigger temper have it the worst. The smallest offense, word or look can make you go off the deep end. So....how to get a hold on those destructive emotions that can get us into an even worse situation? Some anger managment techniques are definitely in order!

I'm no anger management expert, trust me, and I do have a quick to react temper at times. However, as I'm gaining some wisdom along with my years, I'm realizing that some of those sayings regarding this issue are definitely worth practising:

"Pick your battles". "Take the path of least resistance". "Be the bigger person". And my favorite "Ya gotta know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em, know when to walk away, know when to run". (thanks, Kenny Rogers!)

One technique that I use a lot of the time when someone pisses me off is to

A) take a deep breath

B) walk away

and then

C) start counting backwards from 10.

Then I remind myself of how good my life is, how much I have to offer the world, how blessed I am and how easy it would be for me to lose it all by going to jail.

I then tell myself that this person who is offending me by being overtly rude is an idiot and maybe has some deep problems. Also, their life must be pretty miserable to be out in public like they are, trying make other people as miserable as they are by being mean and nasty. Their life must suck! This makes me feel much, much better! ;)

Sometimes walking away is really hard, but you have to think like Ghandi in these moments! My hardest task is backing off when someone gets physical. After all, one does have to defend oneself. However, upon looking back, and unless you're dealing with a total psycho, you can usually see where in that situation there was an opportunity to de-escalate it before it even got to that point.

I am noticing that people are hyper aggressive nowadays, and if I reacted and responded to all of them the way I really want to, I'd just be out here fighting all damn day. Well, there's no time for that!
I have a life! ;)

Got a quick temper? Well, now is a good time to begin working on that. It IS something that you can change, but it will take hard work and also the use of a few techniques. Remember, you can't control what other people do; you can only control the way you decide to react to it.

Here are some cool anger management techniques I found on the Mayo Clinic's website:

Anger management tips: 10 ways to tame your temper

10 tips to help get your anger under control

1. Take a 'timeout.' Although it may seem cliche, counting to 10 before reacting really can defuse your temper.

2. Get some space. Take a break from the person you're angry with until your frustrations subside a bit.

3. Once you're calm, express your anger. It's healthy to express your frustration in a non confrontational way. Stewing about it can make the situation worse.

4. Get some exercise. Physical activity can provide an outlet for your emotions, especially if you're about to erupt. Go for a brisk walk or a run, swim, lift weights or shoot baskets.

5. Think carefully before you say anything. Otherwise, you're likely to say something you'll regret. It can be helpful to write down what you want to say so that you can stick to the issues. When you're angry, it's easy to get sidetracked.

6. Identify solutions to the situation. Instead of focusing on what made you mad, work with the person who angered you to resolve the issue at hand.

7. Use 'I' statements when describing the problem. This will help you to avoid criticizing or placing blame, which can make the other person angry or resentful — and increase tension. For instance, say, "I'm upset you didn't help with the housework this evening," instead of, "You should have helped with the housework."

8. Don't hold a grudge. If you can forgive the other person, it will help you both. It's unrealistic to expect everyone to behave exactly as you want.

9. Use humor to release tensions. Lightening up can help diffuse tension. Don't use sarcasm, though — it's can hurt feelings and make things worse.

10. Practice relaxation skills. Learning skills to relax and de-stress can also help control your temper when it may flare up. Practice deep-breathing exercises, visualize a relaxing scene, or repeat a calming word or phrase to yourself, such as "Take it easy." Other proven ways to ease anger include listening to music, writing in a journal and doing yoga.

Try a few of them out! If one doesn't work, move on to the next! Why are we so obsessed with beautiful celebrities, but not scholars?

Are we just kidding ourselves when we say we'd prefer to be smart? How about what we look for when choosing a mate? While many do look past pure physical traits when choosing a life partner (if they didn't, half the population wouldn't even exist!), the first question one will always ask in this instance is "how does he/she look?". Only after that concern is all other pertinent info sought.

Without a doubt, beauty has its advantages. Prettier people always seem to be more easily accepted and admired (at first), and in many cases, can trade on their looks to get themselves to a better position in life.
